This reading level is far below the level needed to earn a living wage.  The National Literacy Act (Public Law 102-73, July 25, 1991) defines literacy as an individual’s ability to read, write, and speak English, and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, to achieve one’s goals, and develop one’s knowledge and potential.

 

More than 20% of Adults in Arkansas read at or below the fifth grade level

Workers who lack a High School Diploma earn a mean monthly income of $425

compared to $1829 per month for those with a Bachelor’s Degree.  43% of people with the lowest literacy scores live in poverty.  17% receive food stamps and 70% have no job or a part time job.

There Is Hope....There Is Help !

The Literacy Council of Independence County is ready to serve. Over 13,600 adult students have been tutored from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009 – 9,400 in Basic Literacy and 4,200 in English as a Second Language (ESL).


 

In order to accomplish this wonderful achievement over 5,500 Arkansans just like yourself served as volunteer tutors.  These tutors provided 104,896 hours of instruction; a value of $2,124,144 (according to Independent Sector, a national nonprofit association which calculates the value of a volunteer hour at $20.25.)

The vision of the Literacy Council is to improve the quality of life for adult learners through improving their literacy skills or learning English as a second language, so that they may develop their full potential, gain access to greater opportunities and become fully involved in their community.
