Seeking conversation group leaders!

We are seeking 6 volunteer facilitators to guide bi-weekly conversation groups, dubbed “Talk Time.” Talk Time presents an opportunity to meet and talk with people from around the world and to learn about other cultures. Volunteers facilitate conversation in a social setting, exchange information and experiences with people of other cultures, and help non-native speakers feel comfortable talking to English-speakers by creating a non-critical, accepting and informal environment.

Facilitators, working in teams of two, will participate in two 1.5 hour conversation groups each month, from February through July. The conversation groups will take place on Monday evenings from 5:00 to 6:30 at the Early Learning and Enrichment Center (elementary school) at 1900 Lyon Street in Batesville, AR.

TALK TIME VOLUNTEER FACILITATOR: JOB DESCRIPTION

Overview: Talk Time is an opportunity to meet and talk with people from around the world and to learn about other cultures. Talk Time volunteers facilitate conversation in a social setting, exchange information and experiences with people of other cultures, and help non-native speakers feel comfortable talking to Americans by creating a non-critical, accepting and informal environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend Talk Time orientation and training, and any session planning meetings
  • Attend Talk Time 1.5 hours every other week
  • Notify program as soon as you learn you can't attend a Talk Time session

Qualifications:

  • ability to elicit responses from newcomers
  • patience, creativity and willingness to to use a variety of methods to promote communication
  • sensitivity to potential differences in culture
  • willingness to listen more than talk
  • desire to develop friendships with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • good sense of humor
  • commitment to lead sessions for approximately 6 months
