One of the best aspects of literacy tutoring is seeing a student reach a goal. Here's one of our favorite success stories, from former AmeriCorps members, Matthew Carpenter.
"One of my English students had a dream to own a rent house. He said he wanted an easy job, compared to his job working at a chicken plant. He talked about different "easy jobs," like doing garbage pickup, driving, or yard maintenance.
Eventually, he decided to pursue his dream of owning rent houses so he could stop working at the plant. He found a house to buy, and he negotiated a price with the seller. I was proud of him for this accomplishment, because he spoke almost no English when we started working together a year and a half ago. Today, he is able to make deals and achieve his dreams."
